GoHighLevel Setup Guide (2026): What to Do in Your First Week, in the Right Order
Short answer
Set up HighLevel in this order: pick one job to test, buy a local number, submit A2P 10DLC registration in Settings > Phone System > Trust Center (approval can take time, so do it on day one), turn on Missed Call Text Back, then build a Voice AI agent, test it by web call and phone call, deploy it with working hours, and check the call log. Do not point real customers at it until a live external call works end to end. HighLevel advertises a 14-day free trial, but usage fees can still apply and billing starts automatically when it ends, so decide on day 12.
US only: A2P 10DLC registration applies to US phone numbers and US carriers. Texting rules in the UK, EU, Australia, New Zealand and Canada are different (sender ID, number bundles, consent laws), so check your own country’s rules before relying on this.
How this guide was made: Our guides are researched and drafted with the help of AI tools, then fact-checked against the linked sources before publishing. Editorial policy.
HighLevel (GoHighLevel) can do a lot, which is exactly why new users stall: there are too many menus. This guide gives you one narrow job and a sequence for a one-location service business (plumber, HVAC, dental, cleaning, and similar): never lose a call or text again. It follows HighLevel's help documentation as checked October 11, 2026. Menu names change, so check the linked articles if a screen looks different.

What should you set up first in HighLevel?
Only the pieces that stop missed leads:
- A local phone number for the business
- A2P 10DLC registration so US texts get delivered
- Missed Call Text Back
- Optionally, an after-hours Voice AI agent
Skip websites, funnels, courses and snapshots until these work. Not sure the problem justifies the cost? Run the missed call revenue calculator first.
Day 1: Number, plan and A2P registration
Pick a plan. Starter is $97 a month, Unlimited $297, Agency Pro $497 (HighLevel pricing). One business almost always starts on Starter; the plan quiz and our pricing guide explain the differences. The pricing page advertises a 14-day free trial; billing starts automatically when it ends unless you cancel, and usage fees can apply during it (see the free trial guide).
Get a local number. A local number costs $1.15 a month, and texts are billed per segment (Phone System Pricing). Decide whether customers will call this number directly or you will forward your existing line to it.
Start A2P 10DLC registration today. HighLevel's rule: registration is required to send SMS or MMS to US recipients from standard 10-digit local numbers. Per HighLevel's A2P article:
- Go to Settings > Phone System > Trust Center and start A2P registration.
- Choose the brand type. A business with an EIN or Tax ID registers as a Standard Brand; Sole Proprietor is for one-employee businesses without a tax ID.
- Enter the legal name and registration number exactly as on official records.
- Complete the Campaign: use case, description, sample messages, how people consent, and your website, Privacy Policy and Terms.
- Run the compliance review, fix anything it flags, and submit.
Most rejections come from mismatches between what you submit and your website or consent process, not from empty fields. Prepare the wording first with our A2P 10DLC checker and read the registration walkthrough. After approval, confirm the number shows A2P Verified under Settings > Phone System > Phone Numbers.

Per HighLevel's Missed Call Text Back article:
- Settings > Phone System > Voice > Voicemail & Missed Call Text Back
- Open Missed Call Text Back and check Enable.
- Click Customize and write the message. Make it read well without the caller's name, since new callers may not be known contacts.
- Send yourself a test message, then Save.
- Set the incoming call timeout. HighLevel suggests roughly 10 to 20 seconds.
The built-in setting texts after every missed call, even repeat calls. To avoid duplicates, customize the Missed Call Text Back recipe in Workflows. Full steps and 21 message templates are in our missed call text back guide; the text generator builds a one-segment message for your trade.
Test it: call the number from a phone that isn't your own business line, let it ring out, and confirm the text arrives. Until A2P shows approved, delivery may be blocked, which is why Day 1 comes first.
Days 3 to 5: Add an after-hours Voice AI agent (optional)
Voice AI is billed per minute on top of the plan, so treat this as step two of the experiment. HighLevel's Voice AI guide breaks it down:
- Go to AI Agents > Voice AI > Agent List > + Create Agent and choose Create Custom Agent (or install a Marketplace agent and review everything in it).
- Give it a name, voice, model, language and time zone, then write the prompt. HighLevel says a good prompt defines the role, what to collect, what it may answer, what it must avoid, when each action runs, when to transfer, and how the call ends. Tell it not to guess when it lacks information. Our prompt builder drafts one with safety lines for emergencies.
- Add a Knowledge Base with hours, services, service area and policies.
- Add only the actions you need: Call Transfer, Appointment Booking (connect a calendar), Send SMS, or Update Contact Field.
- Test with a Web Call first, then a Phone Call. Call Transfer does not work in Web Call tests.
- Deploy: choose the number, set Call Routing (answer directly or use as backup) and Working Hours (a custom schedule can run past midnight).
HighLevel warns that assigning a number doesn't guarantee the agent answers: working hours, routing mode, forwarding, timeout and voicemail all matter. For a trade-specific script, see the HVAC, plumbing and electrician scripts.
Day 6: Follow up on replies
When a caller texts back, someone has to see it. In Automations > Workflows, use the Customer Replied trigger with a filter such as Contains Phrase ("book", "price", "quote") and actions like an internal notification or creating an opportunity (HighLevel: Customer Replied trigger). Keep it to one workflow that alerts you.
Day 7 and before the trial ends: Test and decide
- Call from an outside phone during and outside working hours, once for each path.
- Confirm the call log shows the transcript, summary and action results.
- Open your wallet and usage and add up charges for numbers, texts and AI minutes.
- Count how many real leads the setup caught. If it caught none, you've learned that cheaply.
- If you keep going, you own the monthly bill. If not, cancel before the trial ends.
Common setup mistakes
- Waiting to register A2P, then wondering why texts don't arrive
- Registering with a name or website that doesn't match official records
- A long ring timeout, so the text lands minutes late
- Skipping the outside-phone test
- Letting the AI agent guess prices or availability
FAQ
How long does GoHighLevel setup take? The text-back itself takes about five minutes, per HighLevel's docs. A2P approval time depends on carrier review, so start it first. Plan a week for text-back plus a tested Voice AI agent.
Do I need A2P registration for missed call text back? If you text US recipients from a standard local number, HighLevel says registration is required. Toll-free numbers use a separate verification process.
Can I set up Voice AI without a phone number? You can test with a Web Call without a number, but a live agent needs an eligible number or number pool.
What does it cost to run for one business? The plan fee plus usage. Our pricing guide's examples put usage at roughly $25 to $36 a month for one service business, before Voice AI heavy use. Check HighLevel's current rates.
Can I cancel during the trial? HighLevel says billing starts automatically when the trial ends unless you cancel. Check the terms on the official page.
