How to Set Up GoHighLevel Voice AI for After-Hours Calls (Working Hours, Deploy and Test)

Short answer

In HighLevel you set up an after-hours Voice AI agent under AI Agents > Voice AI. Create or edit the agent, add a knowledge base and actions (call transfer, SMS, appointment booking, workflow trigger), then open the Deploy tab. Assign an eligible LC Phone or Twilio number, choose "Answer calls directly" or "Use as backup", and set Working Hours to All Hours or a Custom Schedule with active days and time ranges. HighLevel's docs say assigning a number does not guarantee the agent answers every call, because Working Hours, routing mode, forwarding, timeout and voicemail all affect routing. Web Call tests do not run Call Transfer, so test transfers with a real phone call. Voice AI usage and phone charges are billed separately. An after-hours answering setup has one job: when you are closed and a customer calls, something picks up, collects the details and gets a human to follow up in the morning. HighLevel's Voice AI can do that, and the setup is a handful of screens. This guide follows HighLevel's own help articles, checked October 11, 2026.

We have not run a business on this feature for months and we don't promise results; this is a walkthrough of the documented steps, plus the places the docs say it can go wrong. What do you need before you start?

  • A HighLevel account. See pricing and the free trial guide for what can cost money.
  • An LC Phone or Twilio number. HighLevel's Voice AI guide says Voice AI only works on accounts using LC Phone or Twilio numbers (AI Employee Voice Call Capabilities).
  • US texting registered if the agent will send texts. See our A2P 10DLC guide.
  • A short list of facts for the agent: hours, services, service area, and what to do in an emergency. Our free prompt builder helps you write that.

How do you create the agent?

HighLevel's guide (Create, Test, and Deploy a Voice AI Agent) says you can start from a prebuilt Marketplace agent, the Custom Agent builder or the visual Flow Based Builder. For an after-hours line:

  1. Go to AI Agents > Voice AI and create an agent.
  2. Add a knowledge base with the facts the agent may use: business hours, services, pricing policy, locations and common questions.
  3. Add actions. The ones that matter after hours: Update Contact Field (save what the caller said), Appointment Booking, Send SMS (a confirmation text), Trigger a Workflow (for example, notify the owner) and Call Transfer (to a human number for true emergencies).

HighLevel distinguishes Call Transfer, which sends the caller to a person or external number, from Agent Transfer, which hands the call to another Voice AI agent (Voice AI Agent Transfer).

How do you deploy it for after-hours calls only?

Open the agent and go to the Deploy tab. Three settings decide what happens:

Setting Options After-hours use
Phone number An eligible LC Phone or Twilio number or number pool The number customers call
Call routing mode Answer calls directly, or Use as backup See below
Working Hours All Hours, or Custom Schedule Custom Schedule for the hours you are closed

Answer calls directly means the agent answers applicable incoming calls without waiting for the human fallback flow. Use as backup means it answers after the earlier routing, such as your own phone, gets no answer (Inbound Calls: IVR, AI, Routing & Call Flow). For daytime you usually want humans first, so Use as backup fits, with the call routing covered in our call routing guide.

How do you set Working Hours?

Per HighLevel's Working Hours guide: on the Deploy tab find Working Hours, pick All Hours or Custom Schedule, select the active days, set a start and end time for each, and click Save. Custom schedules can extend through midnight, so a 6 p.m. to 8 a.m. window is one entry, and you can copy one day's schedule to other days. Working Hours are set per agent.

What does the docs warn can go wrong?

  • A number assignment is not a guarantee. HighLevel says working hours, routing mode, forwarding, timeout, voicemail and the number's call-flow configuration can all affect routing.
  • The root agent controls the call. If you chain agents with Agent Transfer, HighLevel says destination agents' working hours and backup settings are ignored; the root agent's apply.
  • Outside Working Hours, the call follows your other settings, for example voicemail or another number (AI Employee Voice Call Capabilities). Check what that is before you go live, so a caller at 7 a.m. isn't left with nothing.
  • Web Call tests do not execute Call Transfer. HighLevel says to use a phone-call test for transfers (create and deploy guide).
  • Calls end after two hours at most.

How do you test it?

  1. Call the number from a phone that is not saved as a contact, during the scheduled hours. Check that the agent answers, collects a name, number and reason, and the contact record updates.
  2. Call again outside the scheduled hours and confirm the fallback behaves as you expect.
  3. If you set up Call Transfer, test it with a real phone call.
  4. Call from a number saved as an assigned contact. HighLevel notes owner-based routing can send known contacts to their assigned user first.
  5. Open the wallet after a day and check what the test calls cost.

What does it cost?

Voice AI is billed per use or through an AI Employee plan, and phone charges apply to every AI call. HighLevel's pay-per-use rates and our worked monthly bill are in the pricing breakdown; the choice between the $50 and $97 AI plans is in the AI Employee break-even guide. FAQ

Can GoHighLevel Voice AI answer only after hours? Yes. Set Working Hours on the agent's Deploy tab to a Custom Schedule for the hours you are closed.

Does Voice AI work with any phone number? HighLevel's documentation says it works on LC Phone or Twilio numbers.

Should I let Voice AI answer first or be a backup? "Answer calls directly" puts it first; "Use as backup" lets your team answer first. For a business that answers by day, backup mode plus a Custom Schedule is the usual shape, but test it.

Can it book appointments? Appointment Booking is a listed action. Test it against your real calendar.

Do you earn money if I sign up? Yes, we may earn a commission through our affiliate link at no extra cost to you. We don't offer our own bonuses or discounts.
