Spanish Missed Call Text Templates for US Contractors: 31 Accent-Safe Examples
Short answer
About 44.9 million people in the US speak Spanish at home, so a Spanish or bilingual missed call text can be the difference between a reply and a lost job. Watch the accents. é, ñ, ü, ¿ and ¡ are in the standard SMS alphabet (GSM-7), but á, í, ó and ú are not, and just one of them switches the whole text to UCS-2, cutting the limit from 160 to 70 characters per segment. The 31 templates below avoid those four letters without misspelling anything, and every one fits in one segment with a typical business name. Have a native speaker review them before use, and treat replies like BAJA or ALTO as opt-outs.

If you run a contracting business in Texas, California, Florida, Arizona or almost any US metro, a good share of your missed calls come from people who would rather text in Spanish. According to the US Census Bureau's 2024 American Community Survey, 44.9 million people age 5 and older speak Spanish at home, and 58.9% of them speak English "very well" (USAFacts). That second number is why bilingual texts are often the safest default: they work for both groups.
This page gives you 31 ready-to-use missed call text back messages in Spanish and in English + Spanish. You can also build your own in our free missed call text generator, which now has a Spanish and a bilingual mode and counts segments as you edit.
Why accents change the cost of a text
US carriers bill and deliver texts in segments. A text written only with characters from the standard GSM-7 alphabet gets 160 characters per segment (153 per part once it's split). If the text contains even one character outside that alphabet, the whole message switches to UCS-2: 70 characters per segment (67 per part once split). Spanish is mostly safe, with four important exceptions:
| Character | In the GSM-7 alphabet? | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| é É | Yes | No change |
| ñ Ñ | Yes | No change |
| ü Ü | Yes | No change |
| ¿ ¡ | Yes | No change |
| á í ó ú | No | Whole text switches to UCS-2 (70 per segment) |
| Á Í Ó Ú | No | Whole text switches to UCS-2 (70 per segment) |
The alphabet is defined in the 3GPP standard TS 23.038. That standard also describes optional Spanish "national language" tables, but don't count on carriers using them: plan for the basic alphabet.
Here's the difference in practice, counted with the same encoder our generator uses:
| Version | Text | Encoding | Characters | Segments |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fully accented | Hola, somos Rivera Services. Está cerrado ahora, pero recibimos su llamada. ¿Cuándo le conviene que le llamemos? Responda STOP para no recibir más mensajes. | UCS-2 | 156 | 3 |
| Accent-safe | Hola, somos Rivera Services. Ya cerramos, pero vimos su llamada. ¿A qué hora le conviene que le llamemos? Responda STOP para darse de baja. | GSM-7 | 139 | 1 |
Same message, a third of the segments. If you send a few hundred missed call texts a month, that adds up, and multi-part texts are more likely to arrive out of order on older phones.
Accent-safe, not accent-stripped
The tempting fix is to delete the accents: "Esta cerrado," "Cuando le conviene." Don't. Accents change meaning in Spanish (está means "is," esta means "this"; sí is "yes," si is "if"; él is "he," el is "the"), and a text full of missing accents looks careless to a native reader. Instead, choose words that don't need á, í, ó or ú:
| Instead of | Use | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| Está cerrado. Le llamaremos mañana. | Ya cerramos. Le llamamos mañana. | No á or ó; ñ is fine |
| ¿Cuándo le conviene? | ¿A qué hora le conviene? | é and ¿ are in GSM-7 |
| Envíe su dirección. | Responda con la calle y la ciudad. | Avoids í and ó |
| Responda STOP para no recibir más mensajes. | Responda STOP para darse de baja. | Avoids á, and it's shorter |
| plomería, calefacción, jardín | plomero, calentador, pasto | Trade words without á/í/ó/ú |
Each line on the right is GSM-7; each line on the left is UCS-2. Some SMS providers can also swap characters automatically before sending, so check whether yours changes accented letters and what it changes them to.
The templates
Replace [Business] with your business name. Counts below use a sample business name of 11–17 characters. If your name is much longer, shorten the opening ("Hola, somos [Business]." → "[Business]:") to stay in one segment. Every template is GSM-7, uses the formal usted, and keeps an opt-out line where it's the first text someone gets from you.

Opt-outs in Spanish
- Keep the word STOP. Carriers and messaging platforms process STOP automatically, so "Responda STOP para darse de baja" works in both systems.
- Treat Spanish replies as opt-outs too. The FCC's rules say consent can be revoked by any reasonable means, and words beyond STOP count if a reasonable person would understand them as a request to stop (47 CFR 64.1200(a)(10)). Add BAJA, ALTO, CANCELAR and PARAR to your platform's opt-out keywords if it lets you.
- Confirm once. One short confirmation text is allowed, and it can't include marketing. "Listo, ya no le enviaremos mensajes." is 36 characters.
State laws add their own rules on hours and consent. See missed call text back laws by state.
Make it sound natural
- Use usted. It's the safe choice with a new customer anywhere in the US.
- Don't translate English idioms word for word. "Sorry for the inconvenience" is "Disculpe las molestias," not a literal rendering.
- Watch regional words. Carro or coche, cubeta or balde, pasto or césped (careful: césped is fine for GSM-7, but many Spanish words for "lawn" and "garden" carry á or í). Pick what your customers say.
- Get a native review. We drafted these templates with machine assistance and checked every one for encoding and length. Have a Spanish-speaking team member review them for your area before you turn them on, and make sure someone can actually reply in Spanish.

Should I send missed call texts in Spanish or English? If you don't know the caller's language, a bilingual text is the safest default. If most of your callers speak Spanish, or your caller ID or CRM tells you the person prefers Spanish, send Spanish. Only do it if someone on your team can continue the conversation in Spanish.
Why does my Spanish text count as 3 messages? Probably because it contains á, í, ó or ú (or a curly quote or emoji). Any of those switches the whole text to UCS-2, which allows only 70 characters per segment. é, ñ, ü, ¿ and ¡ don't cause this.
Can I just remove the accents? You can, but it can change meaning and looks sloppy. Rewording to avoid á, í, ó and ú keeps the text correct and in one segment.
How do people opt out in Spanish? Keep "Responda STOP para darse de baja" in the first text, and treat replies like BAJA, ALTO or CANCELAR as opt-outs. FCC rules require honoring any reasonable opt-out request within 10 business days.
Are bilingual texts longer than one segment? Not if they're written tight. All four bilingual templates on this page fit in one 160-character GSM-7 segment with a typical business name.
