Best Missed Call Text Back Apps for Contractors (2026): 6 Options Compared on Published Prices
Short answer
There's no single best missed call text back app. It depends on what you already use. If you only want an automatic text when you miss a call, a business phone app is the cheapest fix. Grasshopper starts at $14/month (billed annually) with Instant Response, and Quo (formerly OpenPhone) starts at $15 per user/month (billed annually) with missed-call auto-replies. HighLevel costs more ($97/month plus about a penny per text) but adds a CRM, follow-up workflows and optional Voice AI. If you already run jobs in Housecall Pro or Jobber, check their built-in options first, with two catches. Housecall Pro's missed-call text goes to existing customers and needs its Voice add-on (from $65/month). Jobber's Receptionist ($29/month for 30 conversations) only texts callers who hang up before it starts talking. Podium doesn't publish prices. All prices were checked on each vendor's official site on October 9, 2026.
How this guide was made: Our guides are researched and drafted with the help of AI tools, then fact-checked against the linked sources before publishing. Editorial policy.
A contractor misses calls for boring reasons: you're under a sink, on a roof, or driving between jobs. Missed call text back fixes the worst part of that by texting the caller within seconds, so the lead has something to reply to before they dial the next company on Google. Our own study of 311 contractor homepages found that only about 1 in 5 offered any way to reach the business in writing, so a text-back is still a way to stand out.
This guide compares six tools contractors actually use for it, on what each vendor publishes: pricing pages and help-center articles, checked on October 9, 2026 and linked in the sources. We haven't run these tools on a live business line, so there are no star ratings or "we tested" claims here. Where a vendor doesn't publish something, we say so.
A note on bias: Peace Call is a HighLevel affiliate, and HighLevel is one of the six. We've tried to be straight about where it's overkill, and for a one-person shop that only wants an auto-text, it usually is.
What should a missed call text back app do?
Before comparing brands, decide what you need. These are the questions that separate the tools:
- Who gets the text? Every missed caller, only new callers, or only existing customers? This varies more than you'd expect.
- When does it fire? On any unanswered call, only when no voicemail is left, or only when a caller hangs up on an AI greeting?
- Does it repeat? If the same person calls three times, do they get three texts? Some tools add a cooldown and some don't.
- Can you reply from one inbox, on your phone, without giving out your personal number?
- Is texting registration handled? Every US business texting from a regular 10-digit number needs A2P 10DLC registration. Expect a one-time fee and a small monthly fee whichever tool you choose.
- What happens after the first text? A single "sorry we missed you" helps. Follow-ups, booking links and handing off to a person help more.
The 6 options at a glance
| App | Best for | Who gets the auto-text | Published starting price | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|---|

| Quo (formerly OpenPhone) | Small teams sharing one business number | Missed callers, with separate rules for business hours and after hours | $15/user/mo billed annually ($19 monthly) | One auto-reply per contact every 3 hours; 7-day trial |
| HighLevel | Owners and agencies who want text-back plus follow-up automation | Every missed caller (repeat calls trigger repeat texts unless you build a workflow) | $97/mo plus usage | CRM, workflows, calendars and optional Voice AI in one; more setup |
| Housecall Pro | Shops already running jobs in Housecall Pro | Existing customers | $59/mo billed annually, plus Voice from $65/mo | Missed-call automation lives in the Voice add-on |
| Jobber | Shops already running jobs in Jobber | Callers who hang up before the AI Receptionist starts a conversation | $29/mo (Core, annual); Receptionist $29/mo for 30 conversations | Needs a Jobber dedicated number, which isn't available during the trial |
| Podium | Multi-location businesses that want reviews and texting together | Not documented publicly | Not published ("talk to our sales team") | Get a written quote |
All prices are from each vendor's official pricing page or help center, checked October 9, 2026. They exclude taxes and are in USD.
1. Grasshopper: cheapest way to add a business number with auto-text
What it is: a virtual business phone number that rings your cell, with an app for calls and texts. Its Instant Response feature texts callers you miss.
How the auto-text works, per Grasshopper's help center: - An admin turns it on per number and writes the message, which can be up to 160 characters. - It goes to first-time callers by default. You can switch it to all callers, in which case each caller gets it at most once per day. - It is not sent to callers who leave a voicemail, or to callers who hang up before choosing an extension. - Texting must be enabled and your number registered with carriers first.
Price: Grasshopper's pricing page says plans start at $14/month billed annually. Its plan table lists texting registration at $19.50 one-time ($4.50 for The Campaign Registry and $15 for carrier review) plus $1.50/month, and extra numbers at $9/month (annual) or $10/month (monthly). The page renders the full plan list with JavaScript and blocks some regions, so we couldn't read every tier's price. Check the live page.
Good fit: a one-truck operation that wants a separate business number and a basic auto-text, and doesn't need a CRM.
Watch out for: the voicemail rule. If most of your callers leave a message, they won't get the text. Change your greeting to say "We'll text you back" so callers don't wait on the line.
2. Quo (formerly OpenPhone): best for a small team sharing one number
What it is: a business phone app (OpenPhone renamed itself Quo) for calls and texts on mobile and desktop, with shared numbers so several people can answer the same line.
How the auto-text works, per Quo's support docs: - Auto-replies can be triggered by a missed call, a new voicemail, or an incoming text. - You can write different auto-replies for business hours and after hours. - Each contact gets one auto-reply every 3 hours, so a caller who tries three times in an hour gets one text, not three. - Setup is on the web or desktop app, not mobile.
Price: Starter is $15 per user/month billed annually or $19 monthly. Business is $23/$33 and Scale is $35/$47. Each user gets one number, and extra numbers are $5/month. Calling and texting to US and Canadian numbers is listed as unlimited, subject to a fair-use policy. Texting registration is $19.50 one-time plus $1.50 to $3/month. Quo also includes an AI agent called Sona, with 1,000 free credits (about 10 calls). There's a 7-day free trial.
Good fit: a 2-to-5-person shop where the office and techs share one line and someone can reply to texts during the day.
Watch out for: per-user pricing adds up as the team grows, and there's no job scheduling or invoicing. Quo lists integrations with Jobber and HighLevel if you want both.
3. HighLevel: best when you want follow-up automation, not just one text
What it is: a CRM and marketing platform with its own phone system. Missed call text back is a built-in phone setting, and the same account includes workflows, calendars, review requests, web forms and optional Voice AI. It's also built for agencies, with a separate sub-account for each client business.
How the auto-text works, per HighLevel's help center: - You turn it on under Settings → Phone System → Voice, write the message, and set how long the phone rings before a call counts as missed (HighLevel suggests 10 to 20 seconds). - It texts every missed caller. HighLevel's own docs warn that a caller who tries several times gets several texts, and recommend a workflow with a wait step or tags if you want to avoid that. - If the number that was called can't send texts, HighLevel picks another eligible number in the account, so the reply may come from a different number. - Contacts on Do Not Disturb don't get the text.
Price: Starter is $97/month ($970/year), and the pricing page advertises a 14-day free trial. Phone usage is billed on top from a prepaid wallet. A local number is $1.15/month, and each US text segment is $0.00747 outbound or inbound, plus carrier fees of a fraction of a cent. Texting from a local number needs A2P 10DLC registration: $22.50 one-time plus $1.50 to $10.50 per month for a Low Volume campaign. Our GoHighLevel pricing guide breaks down a full monthly bill.
Good fit: owners who want the text to start a sequence. For example: text back, wait 20 minutes, send a booking link, alert the on-call tech if the reply says "leak", then ask for a review after the job. HighLevel also suits agencies setting this up for local businesses (see how agencies sell missed call text back), and anyone who wants Voice AI to answer some calls.
Watch out for: it's a big platform. If you won't use the CRM or workflows, you're paying $97 a month for a feature a $14 phone app also has. There's also a learning curve. The free trial is the time to build and test the flow.
Try HighLevel's missed call text back and follow-up workflows
HighLevel includes a business phone system, automatic missed call text back, workflows, calendars and optional Voice AI, with a 14-day free trial on its pricing page. Usage fees for numbers and texts apply. Check current pricing and terms on the official site.
See HighLevel plansPaid link: Peace Call earns a commission if you buy through it, at no extra cost to you. Check HighLevel’s current pricing and terms before you sign up.4. Housecall Pro: use it if you already run jobs there
What it is: field service software for scheduling, dispatching, estimates, invoicing and payments. Its phone system, Voice, is a separate add-on.
How the auto-text works, per Housecall Pro's help center: - In Voice settings, a missed call automation sends a text to your existing customers when you miss their call. - You choose whether it runs during business hours, outside business hours, or any time, and you can add your online booking link to the message. Your company name must appear in it. - Replies go to the Customer Inbox for a person to answer.
Price: Basic is $59/month billed annually ($79 monthly), Essentials $149 ($189 monthly), and MAX $299 ($329 monthly). Voice is billed separately: call tracking from $45/month and VoIP plus call tracking from $65/month, plus overages. Minutes, voicemails and forwarded calls all count toward usage. There's a 14-day free trial of MAX with no credit card.
Good fit: a shop already on Housecall Pro that wants calls, texts and customer records in one place.
Watch out for: the help article describes texting existing customers, so confirm with Housecall Pro whether brand-new callers get the text. New callers are the leads you most want to keep.
5. Jobber: an AI receptionist rather than a classic text-back
What it is: field service software for quotes, scheduling, invoicing and payments, with an AI add-on called Receptionist that answers calls and texts. We compare the two platforms in depth in GoHighLevel vs Jobber.
How the auto-text works, per Jobber's help center: - Receptionist answers calls to your Jobber dedicated phone number. You can forward your existing line to it. - Its SMS send back setting texts callers who hang up before Receptionist starts a conversation, for example during the greeting. Each caller gets at most one text-back per 24 hours, and anyone who replied STOP is skipped. - So the main fix is the AI answering the call. The text is a backup for hang-ups.
Price: Jobber plans start at $29/month (Core, 1 user, billed annually). Two-way texting comes with Grow (from $149/month annual). Receptionist is a $29/month add-on for 30 conversations, then $0.79 each, and it's included on Plus (from $399/month annual). Jobber says the dedicated number is available on select plans and not during the trial.
Good fit: a Jobber shop that wants an AI to answer and book jobs straight into its Jobber schedule.
Watch out for: if you just want "text everyone I miss", we didn't find a standalone setting for that in Jobber's help docs.
6. Podium: ask for a quote
What it is: a lead and communication platform for local businesses, combining reviews, phones, webchat, texting and an AI employee. Podium says more than 100,000 businesses use it.
Price: Podium's pricing page doesn't list prices. It says "talk to our sales team for details". Because we can't verify cost or contract terms from public pages, we can't rank it against the others. If you're quoted, ask for the monthly price, contract length, and how missed calls are handled, in writing.
What would one business pay per month?
A labeled example: one owner-operator, one business number, about 60 missed calls a month, with each caller replying once (about 120 text segments). Annual billing is used where it's offered. This is our arithmetic from the published prices above, not a quote. It excludes taxes and card fees.
| Setup | How we calculated it | Approx. monthly cost |
|---|---|---|
| Grasshopper, entry plan | $14 + $1.50 texting registration fee | ≈ $15.50 (+ $19.50 one-time) |
| Quo Starter, 1 user | $15 + $1.50 to $3 registration fee | ≈ $16.50–$18 (+ $19.50 one-time) |
| HighLevel Starter | $97 + $1.15 number + 120 × $0.00747 + about $0.40 to $0.90 carrier fees + $1.50 to $10.50 campaign fee | ≈ $101–$110 (+ $22.50 one-time) |
| Housecall Pro Basic + Voice | $59 + $65 VoIP & call tracking (before overages) | ≈ $124 |
| Jobber Grow (1 user) + Receptionist | $149 + $29 for 30 conversations | ≈ $178 |
| Podium | Not published | Ask for a quote |
The cheap options are cheap because they do one thing. HighLevel, Housecall Pro and Jobber cost more because the text-back is bundled with a CRM or field service software. Compare them on whether you'd use the rest of the bundle, not on the text-back alone.
To see whether any of these pays for itself, put your own call numbers into the free missed call revenue loss calculator. Whether one saved job a month covers the cost depends on your average job value and how many callers you lose today.
Which one should you choose?
- You're solo and just want an auto-text: Grasshopper or Quo. Grasshopper is the lowest published entry price. Quo has the cooldown and separate after-hours rules.
- Two to five people share the phone: Quo, or HighLevel if you also want pipelines and follow-up sequences.
- You want the text to start a follow-up sequence (booking link, reminders, review requests) or want Voice AI later: HighLevel.
- You already run jobs in Housecall Pro or Jobber: start with their built-in options and check the limits above. HighLevel and Quo both list Jobber integrations if you want to run one alongside it.
- You're an agency setting this up for clients: HighLevel, which is built around sub-accounts for client businesses. See our plan quiz to find the right tier.
Before you switch on any text-back
Whichever app you choose, the setup checklist is the same:
- Write a one-segment first text. It should name the business, acknowledge the call and ask one easy question. Our free missed call text generator writes trade-specific versions and counts SMS segments. Trade examples: plumbers, pest control, auto repair.
- Register for texting. Use our free A2P 10DLC campaign helper to draft the description, sample messages and opt-in wording.
- Check quiet hours and opt-out rules. A reply to someone who just called is treated differently from marketing in several states, but it isn't automatically exempt. See missed call text back laws by state.
- Plan after-hours emergencies. A text isn't enough for a gas smell or water near the panel. Use an after-hours script for HVAC, plumbing or electricians.
- Test it. Call your own number from a cell you don't use for work, hang up, and time how long the text takes. Do it again after hours.

FAQ
What is the best missed call text back app for a small contractor? For a one-person shop that only wants an automatic text, a business phone app such as Grasshopper (from $14/month billed annually) or Quo (from $15 per user/month billed annually) is the cheapest option on published prices checked October 9, 2026. If you want the text to start follow-ups, booking links and review requests, HighLevel ($97/month plus usage) does more.
Is there a free missed call text back app? None of the six tools here is free for ongoing business use. Quo, Housecall Pro, Jobber and HighLevel publish free trials (7 or 14 days). US carrier registration for business texting also carries its own one-time and monthly fees, whichever app you use.
Does Housecall Pro have missed call text back? Yes. Housecall Pro's Voice add-on has a missed call automation that texts existing customers when you miss their call, during or outside business hours. Voice is billed separately from the main plan, starting at $45/month for call tracking or $65/month for VoIP plus call tracking.
Does Jobber text back missed calls? Partly. Jobber's AI Receptionist ($29/month for 30 conversations, included on Plus) answers calls, and its SMS send back setting texts callers who hang up before Receptionist starts a conversation. We didn't find a standalone "text every missed call" setting in Jobber's help docs.
Do I need A2P 10DLC registration for missed call text back? Yes, if you text US customers from a regular 10-digit local number. Grasshopper and Quo list $19.50 one-time plus a monthly fee, HighLevel lists $22.50 one-time plus $1.50 to $10.50 a month for a Low Volume campaign, and Jobber asks US businesses to register their dedicated number.
Will a missed call text back annoy customers who call twice? It can. Quo limits auto-replies to one per contact every 3 hours, Grasshopper's "all callers" option sends once per caller per day, and Jobber's send back fires at most once per 24 hours. HighLevel texts every missed call by default, and its docs recommend a workflow with a wait step to avoid repeats.
