How Much Does an Answering Service Cost? Published 2026 Prices From 9 Providers, Compared

Short answer

As of October 2026, live answering services with published prices charge roughly $1.20 to $5.00 per receptionist minute, depending on the provider and plan size, with entry plans from about $44 to $250 a month. Per-call human plans we checked work out to about $7 to $11.50 per call. AI receptionists cost far less per call, from flat plans around $25 to $300 a month to pay-per-use rates of a few cents a minute, but they need careful setup. In our labeled example of 100 calls averaging 3 minutes, published human plans ranged from about $384 to $1,725 a month, and AI options from about $23 (plus tokens, for existing HighLevel users) to about $213.

How this guide was made: Our guides are researched and drafted with the help of AI tools, then fact-checked against the linked sources before publishing. How we research.

"How much does an answering service cost?" has a frustrating answer on most pages: "it depends." It does, but many providers publish their prices, so you can estimate your bill before you talk to sales.

This guide collects the published prices of nine providers, as listed on their own pricing pages on October 8, 2026: five per-minute live answering services, one per-call live service, and four AI receptionist options. It explains the three billing models, converts plans into effective per-minute and per-call rates, works through two labeled examples, and lists the fees and billing rules that change what you actually pay. We picked these providers because they publish prices, not because they're the best or the only options. Prices change often, so recheck the linked pages before you sign anything.

If you're still deciding whether you want a human service, an AI receptionist, or voicemail, start with our AI receptionist vs. answering service vs. voicemail comparison, which covers trade-offs beyond price.

How do answering services charge?

There are three common billing models, and the model matters as much as the price.

Model How the bill is calculated Who it favors Watch for
Per receptionist minute A monthly bundle of minutes, plus a rate per extra minute Businesses with short calls How minutes are rounded, and whether after-call work counts
Per call A monthly bundle of calls, plus a rate per extra call Businesses with long or complex calls Per-call add-ons (booking, transfers, intake)
AI pricing Per minute, per call, per unique caller, or a flat fee High volumes of routine calls Setup time, tokens, and phone charges billed separately

Most providers also offer custom or enterprise pricing above their largest published plan.

What do per-minute live answering services cost?

Entry plans start at about $44 to $250 a month, and the effective rate falls from about $2 to $5 per minute on small plans to about $1.20 to $3.50 on larger ones. Here are the published plans:

Sources: Specialty Answering Service pricing, PATLive pricing, Posh pricing, Abby pricing, and Ruby pricing, all checked October 8, 2026. "Effective rate" is the monthly price divided by included minutes, which only applies if you use every minute. Larger plans exist at PATLive (up to 5,000 minutes on the page), Posh (350 and 1,000 minutes), and Specialty Answering Service (up to 10,000 minutes).

A few details from those pages that affect the comparison:

  • Specialty Answering Service says it bills by the second rather than rounding to the nearest minute, charges no setup fee, and lists optional extras such as $0.15/min for an IVR front end or voicemail, $0.10/min for patching a caller through to you, and $10/month per sub-account.
  • PATLive says it bills only for time receptionists are live on your calls, not after-call notes or wrap-up, and charges no fees for nights, weekends, bilingual answering, or changes. Prices are plus government taxes and fees. Its own plan labels assume about 2.5 minutes per call (for example, 50 minutes is "about 20 calls").
  • Posh marks its US prices "Effective 1/1/26" and gives a worked example for its Chic plan: 15 minutes costs (15 × $2.30) + $65 = $99.50 before taxes.
  • Abby measures usage in "Abby Minutes": one minute of human answering uses one Abby Minute, and one minute of its AI answering uses half, so a plan stretches up to twice as far on AI. It lists no setup fee and month-to-month terms.
  • Ruby says the only difference between plans is the number of minutes and that there are no extra fees for activation, onboarding, setup, customization, or coverage during certain periods. Its pricing page doesn't list an overage rate, so ask for one in writing.

What do per-call answering services cost?

Smith.ai's live virtual receptionist plans are billed per call, from $300 a month for 30 calls:

Smith.ai Virtual Receptionists plan Included calls Monthly price Extra calls Effective rate
Starter 30 $300 $11.50 per call $10.00 per call
Basic 90 $810 $10.50 per call $9.00 per call
Pro 300 $2,100 $8.50 per call $7.00 per call

Source: Smith.ai pricing, checked October 8, 2026. Smith.ai lists per-call add-ons, such as $1.50 to book an appointment, $0.50 for SMS or Slack transfer notifications, and $0.25 for call recording and transcription. It says it doesn't charge for spam or unsolicited sales calls as long as forwarded lines pass caller ID, offers a 10% discount for 12-month subscriptions, and describes a 30-day money-back guarantee for new clients that excludes overage.

Per-call pricing removes the incentive to rush callers off the phone, but booking and intake add-ons can raise the real per-call cost by a dollar or more. If Smith.ai's per-call pricing doesn't fit your calls, our Smith.ai alternatives guide compares live, AI, and text-back options side by side.

What do AI receptionists cost?

Published AI receptionist prices run from a few cents per minute to about $3 per call, or a flat $25 to $300 a month for a set number of calls or callers.

Option How it's billed Published price
Upfirst Per call, monthly bundles Starter $24.95 (30 calls, then $1.50 each); Premium $59.95 (90, then $1); Pro $159.95 (300, then $0.75); Scale $299 (600, then $0.70). Annual billing is about 20% less.
Goodcall Per agent, per unique caller Starter $79 (100 unique customers); Growth $129 (250); Scale $249 (500); $0.50 per extra customer. Annual billing is 15% off.
Smith.ai AI Receptionist Per call Free: $0 for 25 calls, then $3.00/call. Pro: $150 for 75 calls ($2.50 per extra), $270 for 150, $500 for 300.
HighLevel Voice AI, pay-per-use Per minute + tokens + phone $0.045/min voice engine + text-to-speech from $0.015/min, plus LLM tokens and phone charges; platform plan from $97/month
HighLevel AI Employee Growth / Unlimited Monthly per sub-account $50 (100 Voice AI minutes) or $97 (unlimited, fair use); phone charges still apply

Sources: Upfirst pricing, Goodcall pricing, Smith.ai AI Receptionist pricing, HighLevel pricing, and HighLevel AI Product Pricing, checked October 8, 2026. Upfirst says spam and robocalls don't count against your plan, and it doesn't bill calls under 15 seconds or calls where the caller never speaks. Goodcall defines a unique customer as a caller with a unique phone number who actually interacts with the agent in a given month, and it says minutes and tokens are unlimited.

HighLevel is different from the others: the platform fee also covers a CRM, calendars, texting, missed call text back, and automation, so it's best compared by businesses or agencies that would use those too. Our GoHighLevel pricing guide lists the phone and AI usage rates, and the AI Employee Growth vs. Unlimited guide shows the break-even math.

What would an answering service cost for my call volume?

Here are two labeled examples built only from the published prices above. They're illustrations, not benchmarks: plug in your own call counts and average call length from your phone system's call log.

Assumptions: every call is answered by the service; minutes are whole minutes; per-unique-caller plans count every call as a new caller (a worst case for Goodcall); add-ons, taxes, and phone-line fees are excluded unless noted; we pick the cheapest published plan combination for each provider.

Example 1: 40 calls a month, 2.5 minutes each (100 minutes)

Option How it's priced Approx. monthly cost
HighLevel Voice AI, pay-per-use, existing HighLevel user 100 × $0.06 + $1.15 number + 100 × $0.01165 inbound ≈ $8 + tokens
Upfirst Starter $24.95 + 10 × $1.50 ≈ $40
Smith.ai AI Receptionist, Free 15 calls × $3.00 after the free 25 ≈ $45
Goodcall Starter Under 100 unique callers ≈ $79
Specialty Answering Service, 100 Minute Exactly 100 minutes ≈ $159
PATLive, 100 minutes Exactly 100 minutes ≈ $189
Posh, Elegant Exactly 100 minutes ≈ $215
Abby, Essential (human answering) Exactly 100 Abby Minutes ≈ $329
Ruby, 100 minutes Exactly 100 minutes ≈ $395
Smith.ai Virtual Receptionists, Starter $300 + 10 × $11.50 ≈ $415 before add-ons

Example 2: 100 calls a month, 3 minutes each (300 minutes)

Option How it's priced Approx. monthly cost
HighLevel Voice AI, pay-per-use, existing HighLevel user 300 × $0.06 + $1.15 + 300 × $0.01165 ≈ $23 + tokens
Upfirst Premium $59.95 + 10 × $1.00 ≈ $70
Goodcall Starter 100 unique callers or fewer ≈ $79
HighLevel Voice AI, new Starter account Above + $97 plan ≈ $120 + tokens
Smith.ai AI Receptionist, Pro $150 + 25 × $2.50 ≈ $213
Specialty Answering Service, 220 Minute $269 + 80 × $1.44 ≈ $384
PATLive, 300 minutes Exactly 300 minutes ≈ $479
Abby, all AI answering 300 AI minutes = 150 Abby Minutes: $329 + 50 × $3.29 (our estimate of the plan's Abby Minute rate) ≈ $494
Posh, Luxurious $420 + 100 × $2.10 ≈ $630
Abby, all human answering $599 + 100 × ≈$3.00 (our estimate) ≈ $899
Smith.ai Virtual Receptionists, Basic $810 + 10 × $10.50 ≈ $915 before add-ons
Ruby 300 minutes is between the 200-minute ($720) and 500-minute ($1,725) plans $720 + overage (ask), or $1,725

Two patterns stand out. First, among the live services we checked, the spread is wide: Example 2 ranges from about $384 to $1,725 for the same 300 minutes. Second, AI options are far cheaper per call, but those numbers leave out the time it takes to write a prompt, build a knowledge base, and review transcripts, and none of them replaces a person for complex or emotional calls.

What fees and billing rules change the real cost?

The sticker price is only part of the bill. Check these before you compare plans:

  1. Billing increments. Per-second billing (Specialty Answering Service) and per-minute rounding produce different bills for the same calls. If a page doesn't say how calls are rounded, ask.
  2. After-call work. Some services bill only live talk time (PATLive says so explicitly). Others may count message entry or wrap-up. Get it in writing.
  3. Add-ons. Booking, transfers, intake questions, CRM integrations, bilingual lines, and recordings can be included or extra. Smith.ai's per-call add-ons are a good example of how these are priced.
  4. Spam and short calls. Smith.ai doesn't charge for spam calls that pass caller ID. Upfirst doesn't bill calls under 15 seconds or calls where the caller never speaks. If a provider counts every robocall, your bill rises with your spam.
  5. Overage rates. Overage is usually higher than the plan's effective rate. Size the plan to your normal month, not your quietest one.
  6. Taxes and line fees. PATLive's prices are plus government taxes and fees. Specialty Answering Service lists a line for fees and taxes in its comparison table. Budget a few percent on top.
  7. Contracts, trials, and billing cycles. PATLive, Abby, Posh, Specialty Answering Service, and Smith.ai describe month-to-month or no-contract terms; Ruby's pricing page doesn't say, so ask. PATLive advertises a 14-day free trial, Specialty Answering Service two weeks or 200 minutes, Abby and Posh free trials, and Smith.ai a 30-day money-back guarantee for new clients. Posh also suggests watching for providers that bill on a 28-day cycle, which adds an extra invoice each year.
  8. Your own phone costs. Forwarding calls to a service can add per-minute charges from your own carrier. On HighLevel, for example, inbound calls forwarded to another US number are $0.02/min (Phone System Pricing Guide).

How do you estimate your own answering service cost?

Use two weeks of call logs and a simple formula, then test the cheapest two or three options for real.

  1. Count the calls the service would handle. After-hours only, overflow only, or every call? Use your phone system's missed-call and after-hours reports.
  2. Find your average call length. Most phone systems show call duration. If not, time a sample of calls.
  3. Pick the billing model that fits. Short, simple calls favor per-minute plans; long intake calls favor per-call plans; high volumes of routine questions favor AI.
  4. Calculate: per-minute plan cost = plan price + (minutes − included) × overage rate. Per-call plan cost = plan price + (calls − included) × overage rate + add-ons per call.
  5. Add 10 to 20% headroom for busy months, then compare against the next plan up.
  6. Run a trial on one narrow job, such as after-hours calls, and judge it by your actual invoice and how calls were handled.

To weigh that cost against what unanswered calls may already be costing you, try our free missed call revenue loss calculator. It shows how many recovered jobs a month a given service would need to pay for itself.

Many trades businesses end up with a hybrid: a live service or their own team by day, an AI receptionist after hours, and text-back behind both. Our HVAC, plumbing, and electrician after-hours scripts work with either a human service or AI, so you can compare them on the same calls.

FAQ

How much does an answering service cost per month? Among the providers we checked, published live-answering plans start at $44 (Specialty Answering Service's Economy plan, plus $1.54 per minute) and run to $250 for Ruby's 50-minute plan at the entry level. In our examples, 100 minutes a month cost about $159 to $415 on published live plans, and 300 minutes about $384 to $1,725. AI receptionists start around $25 to $80 a month.

How much does an answering service cost per minute? On the published plans we checked, from about $1.20 (larger Specialty Answering Service plans) to about $5.00 (Ruby's 50-minute plan) per included minute, with overage rates from about $1.29 to $2.99 per minute.

Is a per-call or per-minute answering service cheaper? It depends on call length. Smith.ai's plans work out to $7 to $11.50 per call. At PATLive's 300-minute rate of about $1.60 per minute, calls averaging under about 4 to 7 minutes cost less per minute; longer calls favor per-call pricing.

Is an AI receptionist cheaper than an answering service? On published prices, yes, usually by a wide margin per call. But AI needs setup and ongoing review, and it handles complex, emotional, or high-stakes calls worse than trained people. Many businesses use AI for after-hours or overflow and keep humans for the rest.

Do answering services charge extra for nights and weekends? PATLive, Ruby, Abby, and Smith.ai all say 24/7 coverage is included without a night or weekend surcharge (Smith.ai: calls at 2 a.m. cost the same as at 2 p.m.). For other providers, and for holidays, confirm in writing.

Are there setup fees? Specialty Answering Service, Abby, Ruby, and Smith.ai all say they charge no setup fee. PATLive's phone system charges a one-time $50 fee to activate business text messaging, which is a texting registration cost rather than an answering fee.
