HighLevel Voice AI vs Smith.ai vs Goodcall (2026): Pricing, Features, and When Each Wins
Short answer
Three AI phone options for small service businesses, checked October 9, 2026. Smith.ai AI Receptionist starts at $0 for 25 calls a month (then $3 per call) or $150 for 75 calls on Pro, with optional live-agent escalation. Goodcall bills per unique customer from $79 a month (100 customers, then 79¢ each) with no per-minute charges. HighLevel Voice AI is usage-based (about $0.06 per minute before tokens and phone charges) or $50 / $97 per month on AI Employee plans, on top of a HighLevel plan from $97 a month, and it sits inside the same CRM that runs missed call text back. Pick Smith.ai for AI plus human backup, Goodcall for a predictable AI-only bill, and HighLevel when you also want CRM, texting, and calendars in one stack.
How this guide was made: Our guides are researched and drafted with the help of AI tools, then fact-checked against the linked sources before publishing. Editorial policy.
Choosing an AI receptionist usually comes down to three names: HighLevel Voice AI, Smith.ai's AI Receptionist, and Goodcall. They all answer the phone. They bill differently, escalate differently, and sit in very different software stacks.
This guide compares them side by side using each vendor's own pricing and product pages as checked on October 9, 2026. Where a number isn't published, we say "see vendor site" instead of guessing. Peace Call is a HighLevel affiliate, so read the HighLevel sections with that in mind. We've tried to be fair about when Smith.ai or Goodcall is the better fit.

How much does each one cost? (prices checked Oct 9, 2026)
Smith.ai AI Receptionist
Smith.ai publishes three AI Receptionist tiers. Prices are month-to-month; Smith.ai says canceling needs 30 days' notice.
| Plan | Monthly price | Included real calls | Extra real-call rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 25 | $3.00 |
| Pro | $150 | 75 (or 150 / 300 at lower per-call rates) | $2.50 / $2.30 / $2.17 |
| Enterprise | $500 | 300 (or 500 / 1000+) | $2.17 / $2.10 / custom |
On Pro, Smith.ai lists included per-call rates of $2.00 / $1.80 / $1.67 for the 75 / 150 / 300 tiers. On Enterprise, $1.67 / $1.60 / custom for 300 / 500 / 1000+. Source: Smith.ai AI Receptionist pricing, checked October 9, 2026.
Live agent add-on: Smith.ai's help center says that when you configure live-agent involvement for verification or scheduling, each such call is billed at a flat +$3 on top of the base per-call rate (effective as of November 20, 2025 per Smith.ai). AI-initiated system escalations are listed as +$0. Confirm the current add-on rate in your Smith.ai account before you budget.
Smith.ai also sells separate live Virtual Receptionist plans (from $300/mo for 30 calls). Those are human-first products, not the AI Receptionist compared here. See Smith.ai Virtual Receptionist pricing and our Smith.ai alternatives page.
Goodcall
Goodcall bills per AI agent and meters unique customers (one phone number that actually speaks to the agent in a given month). It says it does not charge for minutes, call counts, or AI tokens. A local number is included; you can forward your existing number.
| Plan | Monthly price | Unique customers included | Extra customer rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | $79 | 100 | 79¢ each |
| Growth | $129 | 500 | 26¢ each |
| Scale | $299 | 2,000 | 15¢ each |
| Enterprise | Custom | see vendor site | see vendor site |

HighLevel Voice AI
HighLevel's Voice AI sits on top of a platform plan (Starter $97/mo, Unlimited $297/mo, Agency Pro $497/mo per HighLevel pricing). AI itself is billed three ways per enabled location (AI Product Pricing, checked October 9, 2026):
| AI option | Monthly AI fee | Voice AI coverage |
|---|---|---|
| Pay-per-use | $0 | Voice Engine $0.045/min + TTS (OpenAI/Cartesia $0.015/min, ElevenLabs V2.5 $0.035/min, ElevenLabs V3 $0.170/min) + LLM tokens |
| AI Employee Growth | $50 | 100 AI Agent minutes/mo (inbound + outbound + widget combined), then pay-per-use |
| AI Employee Unlimited | $97 | Unlimited Voice AI, subject to fair use |
Approx. pay-per-use AI minute before tokens and phone: about $0.06/min with OpenAI or Cartesia TTS ($0.045 + $0.015). HighLevel's own 10-minute OpenAI TTS example comes to $0.60 before LLM tokens and Phone System charges.
Phone System charges are separate on every plan (US local number about $1.15/mo, inbound minutes around $0.01165/min per HighLevel's Phone System Pricing guide). Missed call text back and calendars are native. For plan break-even math, see Growth vs Unlimited. For a full feature review, see GoHighLevel Voice AI review.

Illustration only — not a quote. Assumptions: 75 answered calls; every Goodcall caller is unique; HighLevel uses OpenAI/Cartesia TTS at ≈$0.06/min AI before tokens, average 2 minutes per call (150 Voice AI minutes); add-ons, taxes, and LLM tokens excluded unless noted; HighLevel assumes you already need (or already have) a platform plan.
| Option | How we calculated it | Approx. monthly cost |
|---|---|---|
| Smith.ai AI Receptionist, Free | 25 free + 50 × $3.00 | ≈ $150 |
| Smith.ai AI Receptionist, Pro (75) | Plan includes 75 at $150 | ≈ $150 |
| Goodcall Starter | Under 100 unique customers | ≈ $79 |
| HighLevel Voice AI, pay-per-use (existing HighLevel user) | 150 × $0.06 + number ≈ $1.15 + inbound phone | ≈ $10 + tokens + inbound |
| HighLevel Voice AI, Growth (existing platform) | $50 AI Employee (100 min) + 50 × $0.06 overage | ≈ $53 + tokens + phone |
| HighLevel Voice AI, new Starter + Growth | $97 platform + ≈$53 AI | ≈ $150 + tokens + phone |
| HighLevel Voice AI, Unlimited AI (existing platform) | $97 AI Employee | ≈ $97 + phone |
At this volume, Goodcall Starter is the cheapest published AI-only bill if you don't already pay for HighLevel. Smith.ai Free and Pro both land near $150 at 75 billable calls. HighLevel is cheapest when you already run the platform (or you need CRM + text-back anyway); a brand-new Starter + Growth stack is in the same ballpark as Smith.ai Pro before tokens.

HighLevel's docs list appointment booking, call transfer, CRM updates, and workflow triggers as Voice AI actions (How to Create Voice AI Agents). Smith.ai emphasizes Quality Studio testing, recording/transcription/summaries, and live phone/email/chat support on Pro+. Goodcall emphasizes unlimited minutes, unique-customer metering, and plan limits on workers and external tools.
Before any AI answers a trades line, write down what it must never do (diagnose, invent a price, or keep a gas-leak caller on the line). Our HVAC, plumbing, and electrician scripts are starting points, and the free Voice AI prompt builder keeps trade safety lines in the text.
When each option wins
Choose Smith.ai AI Receptionist when:
- You want AI on most calls but a Smith.ai human for complex or sensitive ones.
- You like per-call pricing and a low-commitment free tier (25 calls/mo).
- You're fine with a receptionist product that is not also your CRM.
Choose Goodcall when:
- You want an AI-only bill with no per-minute meter.
- Your callers repeat often (unique-customer metering helps repeat callers).
- You don't need a full CRM in the same product.
Choose HighLevel Voice AI when:
- You already use HighLevel, or you're an agency that will sell CRM + texting + Voice AI together.
- You want missed call text back, calendars, pipelines, and Voice AI in one stack.
- You're willing to invest in prompts, a knowledge base, and a test matrix.
Use more than one layer when:
- After-hours needs a live voice, but daytime misses only need a text: Voice AI or Goodcall/Smith.ai after hours + missed call text back during the day.
- You want Smith.ai or Goodcall on the phone and HighLevel for CRM/marketing — possible via forwarding and integrations, with more moving parts.

FAQ
Is HighLevel Voice AI cheaper than Smith.ai? It depends on whether you already pay for HighLevel. On published Oct 9, 2026 rates, an existing HighLevel user on pay-per-use Voice AI can land well under Smith.ai Pro's $150 for 75 short calls. A brand-new HighLevel Starter + AI Employee stack is often in the same ballpark as Smith.ai Pro before tokens. Smith.ai's Free tier ($0 for 25 calls) is cheaper than standing up HighLevel if you only need light AI answering.
Is Goodcall cheaper than HighLevel Voice AI? For AI-only answering without a CRM, Goodcall Starter at $79/mo is often cheaper than a new HighLevel Starter + AI stack. If you already run HighLevel for CRM and texting, adding Voice AI (especially pay-per-use or Growth) can be cheaper than adding Goodcall on top.
Does Smith.ai AI Receptionist include live agents? AI answers first. Live North America agents are available as an escalation path. Smith.ai's help center lists a flat +$3 per call when you configure live-agent involvement; AI-initiated system escalations are listed as no extra fee. Confirm in your account.
Does Goodcall charge per minute? No, not on the public plans checked October 9, 2026. Goodcall meters unique customers per month and says minutes and tokens are unlimited.
Can HighLevel Voice AI escalate to a live receptionist service? It can transfer to phone numbers you configure (your on-call tech, office, or a third-party answering service). It does not include Smith.ai-style staffed agents inside the Voice AI fee. Pairing HighLevel with a live answering service is a separate vendor relationship.
Which is best for HVAC, plumbing, or other trades? Any of the three can work if you lock emergency language. HighLevel wins when you also want job follow-up texts and CRM; Smith.ai wins when you want human backup without hiring; Goodcall wins when you want a simple AI-only bill. Start from a trade script (HVAC, plumbing) before go-live.
