Smith.ai Alternatives in 2026: Live Answering Services, AI Receptionists, and Missed-Call Text Back Compared
Short answer
Smith.ai's live receptionist plans start at $300 a month for 30 calls ($10 per call), plus per-call add-ons such as $1.50 to book an appointment. The alternatives fall into three groups. Per-minute live answering services (Ruby, PATLive, Posh, Abby, Specialty Answering Service) suit short calls and start at $44 to $250 a month. AI receptionists (Upfirst, Goodcall, and Smith.ai's own AI Receptionist) cost from $0 to about $80 a month at entry level. Missed-call text back, for example in HighLevel, is the cheapest layer of all but doesn't answer the call. In our 30-call example, published options ranged from about $8 (plus tokens) to $395 a month, against $300 for Smith.ai Starter. Prices checked October 8, 2026.
How this guide was made: Our guides are researched and drafted with the help of AI tools, then fact-checked against the linked sources before publishing. How we research.
Smith.ai is a well-known virtual receptionist service, and its per-call pricing is easy to understand. But at $300 a month for 30 calls, plus add-ons, it isn't the cheapest way to stop missing calls, and plenty of small businesses search for alternatives once they see the bill.
This guide compares the realistic alternatives for a small service business: live answering services that bill by the minute, AI receptionists, and missed-call text back automation. Every price comes from the vendor's own pricing page as checked on October 8, 2026, and is linked in the sources. Where a vendor doesn't publish a number, we say "see vendor site" instead of guessing.
A note on bias: Peace Call is a HighLevel affiliate, and HighLevel is one of the options below. We've tried to be fair to everyone, including where HighLevel is a poor fit. Smith.ai may still be the right choice for you, and we explain when.
How much does Smith.ai cost?
Smith.ai's live "Virtual Receptionists" plans are billed per call, starting at $300 a month for 30 calls. Its separate AI Receptionist plans start at $0 for 25 calls.
| Smith.ai plan | Included calls | Monthly price | Extra calls |
|---|---|---|---|
| Virtual Receptionists, Starter | 30 | $300 | $11.50 per call |
| Virtual Receptionists, Basic | 90 | $810 | $10.50 per call |
| Virtual Receptionists, Pro | 300 | $2,100 | $8.50 per call |
| AI Receptionist, Free | 25 | $0 | $3.00 per call |
| AI Receptionist, Pro | 75 / 150 / 300 | $150 / about $270 / about $500 | $2.50 / $2.30 / $2.17 per call |
Source: Smith.ai pricing and Smith.ai AI Receptionist pricing, checked October 8, 2026. The AI Pro page lists per-call rates of $2.00, $1.80, and $1.67 for the three tiers; the monthly totals for 150 and 300 calls are our arithmetic.
What the live plans include, according to Smith.ai: 24/7 live answering at the same price day or night, lead screening and intake, no setup fees, no charge for spam calls if your forwarded lines pass caller ID, month-to-month terms, a 10% discount for 12-month subscriptions, and a 30-day money-back guarantee for new clients (excluding overage). Many useful features are per-call add-ons: booking an appointment is $1.50, text or Slack transfer notifications $0.50, text and email follow-up $0.50, call recording and transcription $0.25, and a dedicated Spanish line $1.00. If most of your calls need booking plus a follow-up text, the real cost per call is about $2 higher than the plan rate.
What kinds of Smith.ai alternatives are there?
There are three types, and they solve slightly different problems:
- Per-minute live answering services. Real people answer, like Smith.ai's live plans, but you pay per receptionist minute instead of per call. Cheaper when calls are short.
- AI receptionists. Software answers the call, answers common questions, takes messages, and in many cases books appointments. Far cheaper per call, but it needs setup and guardrails.
- Missed-call text back. Nobody answers live. When a call is missed, the caller gets an automatic text within seconds so the conversation can continue by SMS. It's the cheapest layer, and it can sit underneath either of the other two. See our missed call text back guide.

Which live answering services are the best Smith.ai alternatives?
If you want real people on the phone but your calls are short, a per-minute service is usually cheaper than Smith.ai's per-call pricing. PATLive's own plan labels assume about 2.5 minutes per call (its 100-minute plan is "about 40 calls"), so a $189 plan works out to under $5 per call at that length, against $10 on Smith.ai Starter.
- Specialty Answering Service has the lowest published entry price: $44 a month plus $1.54 per minute, or $159 for 100 minutes ($1.44 per extra minute). It lists a 14-day free trial with no credit card, no setup fees, and optional extras such as an IVR front end or voicemail at $0.15 per minute.
- PATLive charges $49 a month plus $2.99 per minute on pay-as-you-go, or $99 for 50 minutes, $189 for 100, and $349 for 200. It says it bills only for time receptionists are live on your calls (not after-call notes), charges nothing extra for nights, weekends, bilingual answering, or changes, offers a 14-day free trial, and does not use AI to answer calls. Prices are plus taxes and fees.
- Posh runs from $65 a month plus $2.30 per minute (Chic) to $130 for 50 minutes, $215 for 100, and $420 for 200, with prices marked effective January 1, 2026.
- Abby sells "Abby Minutes": $165 for 50, $329 for 100, $599 for 200, and $1,380 for 500. Its page says you double your minutes when you choose AI answering, so you can mix human and AI calls on one plan.
- Ruby is the premium option: $250 for 50 minutes, $395 for 100, $720 for 200, and $1,725 for 500. Ruby says there are no extra fees for activation, onboarding, setup, customization, or coverage during certain periods, and that optional AI enhancements are included at no extra cost. Its pricing page doesn't list an overage rate, so ask for it in writing.
When Smith.ai stays the better deal: long calls. If your calls average 5 to 10 minutes (detailed intake, upset customers, legal or medical screening), per-minute plans get expensive and per-call billing protects you. Smith.ai also says it doesn't rush callers off the phone, because it isn't paid by the minute.
Which AI receptionists are the best Smith.ai alternatives?
AI receptionists answer instantly, handle many calls at once, and cost a fraction of live answering. The trade-off is setup time and weaker handling of complex or emotional calls.
- Smith.ai's own AI Receptionist is worth a look before you leave Smith.ai: $0 for 25 calls a month, then $3 per call, or $150 for 75 calls on Pro. Smith.ai says the AI can transfer complex calls to its live North America-based receptionists.
- Upfirst costs $24.95 a month for 30 calls ($1.50 per extra call), $59.95 for 90 ($1), $159.95 for 300 ($0.75), or $299 for 600 ($0.70), with about 20% off on annual billing.
- Goodcall bills per agent and per unique customer: $79 a month for 100 unique customers, $129 for 250, $249 for 500, then $0.50 per extra customer. Minutes and tokens are unlimited, and annual billing is 15% off.
- HighLevel Voice AI is billed by usage: $0.045 per minute for the voice engine plus text-to-speech from $0.015 per minute, LLM tokens, and phone charges, on top of a HighLevel plan from $97 a month. Or use AI Employee plans at $50 or $97 a month per sub-account. It can answer every call or act as a backup that only picks up when your team doesn't. Our HighLevel Voice AI review covers the details.
Before any AI answers your phone, write down what it must never do (diagnose, quote prices you haven't approved, or keep a gas-leak caller on the line). Our HVAC, plumbing, and electrician after-hours scripts are good starting points.
Is missed-call text back a real alternative to Smith.ai?
For some businesses, yes, and it's by far the cheapest. Missed-call text back doesn't answer the call. It texts the caller within seconds of a missed call ("Sorry we missed you, how can we help?") so the lead doesn't go cold while you're on a job.
It works best when callers are happy to text, your team can reply within minutes during working hours, and you mostly lose calls because you're busy, not because nobody is around for days. It works poorly for emergencies that need a live voice, callers on landlines (texts can't reach them), and businesses that won't reply to texts promptly.
In HighLevel, text-back is built into the phone system. US texts cost $0.00747 per segment outbound and inbound plus carrier fees, and a local number is $1.15 a month, on top of a plan from $97 a month (HighLevel Phone System Pricing). You'll also need A2P 10DLC registration before texting US customers from a local number. Many businesses pair it with live answering or AI, so text-back catches whatever slips through. Our GoHighLevel pricing guide shows a realistic monthly bill.

Here's a labeled example at Smith.ai Starter's volume: 30 calls a month averaging 3 minutes (90 minutes). It's our arithmetic from the published prices above, not a quote.
Assumptions: cheapest published plan for each option; every call answered by the service; Goodcall counts every caller as unique; add-ons, taxes, and phone-line fees excluded unless noted.
| Option | How we calculated it | Approx. monthly cost |
|---|---|---|
| HighLevel Voice AI, pay-per-use (existing HighLevel user) | 90 × ($0.045 + $0.015) + $1.15 number + 90 × $0.01165 inbound | ≈ $8 + tokens |
| Smith.ai AI Receptionist, Free | 5 calls × $3.00 after 25 free | ≈ $15 |
| Upfirst Starter | 30 calls included | ≈ $25 |
| Goodcall Starter | Under 100 unique customers | ≈ $79 |
| HighLevel Voice AI, new Starter account | Above + $97 plan | ≈ $105 + tokens |
| Specialty Answering Service, 100 Minute | 90 of 100 minutes | ≈ $159 |
| Abby Starter, all AI answering | 90 AI minutes = 45 of 50 Abby Minutes | ≈ $165 |
| PATLive, 100 minutes | 90 of 100 minutes | ≈ $189 |
| Posh, Elegant | 90 of 100 minutes | ≈ $215 |
| Smith.ai Virtual Receptionists, Starter | 30 calls included | ≈ $300 before add-ons |
| Abby Essential, human answering | 90 of 100 Abby Minutes | ≈ $329 |
| Ruby, 100 minutes | 90 of 100 minutes | ≈ $395 |

Which Smith.ai alternative should you choose?
- You want people, and calls are short (under about 4 minutes): a per-minute live service such as Specialty Answering Service, PATLive, or Posh.
- You want people, and calls are long or complex: Smith.ai's per-call pricing may still be the best value. Ruby if you want a premium live service with AI enhancements included.
- You want the lowest cost and can invest setup time: an AI receptionist (Upfirst, Goodcall, or Smith.ai's AI plan), with a human escalation path for emergencies.
- You mostly miss calls while busy on jobs: missed-call text back first, then add AI or live answering for after hours if you need it.
- You're an agency, or you also want a CRM, texting, and automation: HighLevel, which combines text-back, Voice AI, and a CRM in one platform. For a deeper side-by-side, see our AI receptionist vs. answering service vs. voicemail comparison.
What should you check before switching from Smith.ai?
- Your call log. Average call length decides whether per-call or per-minute pricing is cheaper.
- Your number. Can you keep your number, forward it, or port it? Smith.ai lets you port your business number at no charge; ask the new provider the same question.
- Spam billing. Smith.ai doesn't charge for spam on its live plans if caller ID passes. Upfirst says its AI blocks spam so you never pay for junk calls. Ask everyone else.
- Notice periods. Smith.ai's live service bills through the end of the current monthly cycle when you cancel; its AI Receptionist asks for 30 days' notice.
- Health or legal calls. If calls can involve protected health information, get the BAA question answered in writing before switching. Law firms should also read our law firm after-hours answering guide on intake scripts and vendor supervision.
- A real trial. PATLive and Specialty Answering Service list 14-day free trials. Run your actual calls through the new option for two weeks before you cancel the old one.

What is the cheapest alternative to Smith.ai? On published prices checked October 8, 2026, the cheapest options are AI-based: Smith.ai's own AI Receptionist is free for 25 calls a month, Upfirst starts at $24.95 for 30 calls, and HighLevel's pay-per-use Voice AI costs a few cents per minute for existing HighLevel users. Missed-call text back costs about a penny per text segment but doesn't answer the call.
Is Smith.ai cheaper than Ruby? For 30 short calls a month, yes: Smith.ai Starter is $300 for 30 calls, while Ruby's 100-minute plan is $395. For very short calls, Ruby's 50-minute plan ($250) can be cheaper. The answer depends on your average call length and which Smith.ai add-ons you need.
Does Smith.ai charge per call or per minute? Per call. Its live plans are $300 for 30 calls, $810 for 90, and $2,100 for 300, with extra calls at $8.50 to $11.50. Most other live answering services bill per minute.
Are AI receptionists good enough to replace Smith.ai? For routine calls such as hours, service area, booking, and message-taking, many businesses find AI good enough, at a much lower cost. For emergencies, complaints, and complex intake, keep a human escalation path. Smith.ai's own AI plan and HighLevel's backup mode are designed for that kind of hybrid setup.
Can I use missed-call text back instead of an answering service? If callers can wait a few minutes for a text reply and you respond quickly, text-back alone can be enough. If callers need a live voice right away, such as for urgent repairs after hours, use text-back together with an answering service or AI receptionist rather than instead of one.
