Missed Call Text Message Generator

What it does

Pick your trade, a tone, a language (English, Spanish or bilingual) and the options you need (after-hours, booking link, safety line, opt-out wording). The generator writes 3 to 5 missed-call text variants you can edit and copy. A live counter shows each message’s characters, encoding (GSM-7 or UCS-2) and SMS segments, and flags characters such as emoji or curly quotes that make a text cost more.

Your text-back messages

Edit any message: the counter updates as you type. Replace anything in [brackets] before you use it.

    Check any message

Paste a text you already use to see its encoding and segment count.

Counts follow the standard SMS rules (GSM-7: 160 characters, or 153 per segment when split; UCS-2: 70, or 67 per segment). Some providers convert characters automatically or use slightly different limits, so check the segment count in your own platform before you go live. Peace Call doesn’t store or send anything you type.

Trade versions with examples and tips: Plumbers · HVAC · Dental offices · Pest control. You can also preselect any trade with a link such as ?trade=law.

    How to use the generator

    1. Pick your trade. Each trade asks one question that sorts urgent calls from routine ones, such as “Is water leaking right now?” for plumbers or “Is your car drivable, or do you need a tow?” for auto shops.
    2. Choose a tone. Friendly and Professional change the greeting and apology. Short trims everything that isn’t needed.
    3. Turn on the options you need. Use the after-hours version for your closed-hours text-back, add a booking link if customers can book online, and add a safety line if callers might be in danger.
    4. Edit, check, copy. Keep every message to one segment where you can, then paste it into your phone system or text-back tool as plain text and test it by calling your own number from a mobile phone.

    Spanish and bilingual texts

Choose Español or Bilingual (EN + ES) under Language, or open the generator with ?lang=es or ?lang=bi. The Spanish texts use the formal usted and are written to avoid á, í, ó and ú. Those four letters aren’t in the GSM-7 alphabet, so any one of them switches the whole text to UCS-2 and cuts the limit from 160 to 70 characters. é, ñ, ü, ¿ and ¡ are GSM-7 and are safe to use. The opt-out line becomes “Responda STOP para darse de baja.” (or both languages in bilingual mode), and the bilingual “choose a language” variant lets the caller reply 1 for English or 2 for Spanish.

The Spanish wording was drafted with machine assistance. Have a native speaker on your team review it, and only turn it on if someone can reply in Spanish. For 31 ready-made examples by trade and how to handle Spanish opt-outs such as BAJA, see our Spanish missed call text templates.

How SMS length and segments work

Texts are sent and billed in segments. Which limit applies depends on the characters in the message (Twilio: SMS character limit; HighLevel: How to Calculate SMS and MMS Costs):

EncodingWhen it’s usedOne segmentPer segment when split
GSM-7Only standard GSM characters: letters, digits, common punctuation, a few accented letters160153
UCS-2Any character outside GSM-7: emoji, curly “smart” quotes, em dashes, most non-Latin scripts7067

    Three details trip people up:

Segments matter because you pay for each one. HighLevel, for example, bills US texts per segment plus carrier fees (see our GoHighLevel pricing guide), so a text-back that runs to 2 segments costs twice as much every time it fires. The Fix characters button swaps curly quotes, dashes and similar characters for plain ones and removes hidden characters that sneak in when you copy from a document.

    Compliance notes

This isn’t legal advice, but these are the guardrails most US businesses should know about before turning on text-back:

    FAQ

How long should a missed call text message be?

Aim for one SMS segment: up to 160 characters using only standard GSM-7 characters, or 70 if the message contains an emoji or another character outside GSM-7. Longer messages are split into segments of 153 or 67 characters, and each segment is billed.

Why does one emoji make my text cost more?

An emoji isn’t a GSM-7 character, so the whole message switches to UCS-2 encoding, which fits only 70 characters in one segment (67 per segment when split). Most emoji also count as two characters.

Do missed call text messages need “Reply STOP to opt out”?

Industry guidance from the CTIA says senders should tell people in the message how to opt out, using standard STOP wording, and your carrier registration may expect it in sample messages. Check your provider’s rules. Either way, every STOP request must be honored.

Can I put a link in a missed call text?

Yes, but use a link on your own domain or a branded short domain, not a shared public link shortener, which US carriers discourage. Remember that the full link counts toward the character limit.

Can the generator write missed call texts in Spanish?

Yes. Pick Español or Bilingual (EN + ES) under Language. The Spanish texts avoid á, í, ó and ú, which would switch the message to UCS-2 encoding, so most variants still fit in one 160-character segment. Have a native speaker review the wording before you use it.

Does the generator save or send my messages?

No. Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to Peace Call or anyone else, and nothing is stored.
